Berlin (d.de) – The Friedrich Ebert Foundation (photo) celebrates its 100th anniversary today with a ceremony in Berlin. Federal President Frank-Walter-Steinmeier has been announced as one of the speakers. The foundation was established based on the legacy of Friedrich Ebert, the first democratically elected President of the Reich. According to the Foundation's current chair, Martin Schulz, its approach is to “empower people to get involved themselves and shape democracy in a way that is sustainable and socially just.” It does so by offering political education through events and publications, conducting historical research, commissioning studies, awarding scholarships, and supporting young people who are socially engaged alongside their studies or vocational training.

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation has a large international network: at more than 100 locations worldwide, it aims to contribute to a peaceful and future-oriented society by fostering links between politics, culture, academia and democratic civil society.
