Scholz reaffirms importance of transatlantic relations
Federal Chancellor committed to close political cooperation with the USA.
Berlin (dpa) - Ahead of Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration as US President, the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed his commitment to close political cooperation and joint alliances with the United States. “Transatlantic relations are extremely significant for Germany and for Europe,” Scholz said in an interview. He also urged people not to forget the importance of the USA to democracy in West Germany. “NATO is the guarantor of our security, which is why we need stable relations with the USA,” Scholz said. Trump will take the Presidential Oath of Office for the second time on Monday this week.
Scholz said that he has already spoken to Trump twice by phone. “They were very good and friendly conversations. Our advisors have also met a number of times, so we’re not starting with a completely blank sheet of paper with the new administration,” Scholz went on, stressing that the US is Germany’s closest ally.
