Memories of special football moments
The Euros in Germany bring back memories of past matches and some very personal moments for fans, too.
Some games and goals are firmly anchored in the collective memory of football fans, while other memories are highly personal. With the Euros currently on in Germany, hundreds of people from all over the world are talking about their own very varied football moments on our deutschland.de Instagram channel. Some of them mention the trophies won by their national teams, some are put in mind of their favourite club, while others write about fascinating personal encounters in connection with a football match. Insights into the deutschland.de community’s football moments:
Germany fans have vivid memories of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Ten years ago at the legendary Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Germany won their fourth World Cup title, having previously clinched the title in 1954, 1974 and 1990. “Schürrle to Götze ... Götze GOOAL!” writes one fan on Instagram, recalling the moment in stoppage time when André Schürrle crossed to Mario Götze, who went on to tap the ball into back of the net. Germany’s 7:1 win over Brazil in the semi-final is mentioned more often than the final. It was a simply “unforgettable” game for lots of fans.
For others, the triumphs of their national teams are likewise unforgettable – for Italians it was the win over Germany in 2006, for example. After winning 2-0 against hosts Germany in the semi-finals, the Squadra Azzurra beat France on penalties in the final. “Football has a unique way of creating unforgettable memories and 2006 was certainly one of the best moments for me,” writes one fan about his personal “summer fairytale” at the World Cup in Germany.
But personal football moments are not just about great triumphs and legendary matches. One Polish woman particularly recalls the match between Germany and Poland at the 2016 Euros, for example, which she watched in a fan zone in Frankfurt an der Oder – under a bridge between the two neighbouring countries: “Polish and German fans cheered together – and with me, a Polish girl with a German boyfriend (now husband) who was doing an Erasmus semester in Germany.”
The EURO 2024 in Germany produced unforgettable moments even before the final on 14 July in Berlin – such as when tens of thousands of Scots descended on Munich for the opening match against Germany. It’s really good when the supporters have a great time together, writes one fan – as was the case at the Scotland v Germany match: “There was a great atmosphere and lots of cheering together, no matter where people came from.”
