Baerbock: agreement is “just the start”
Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that the outcome of negotiations at the COP29 conference in Baku was a success given the challenging circumstances.
Baku (dpa) – The world climate conference in Azerbaijan has agreed to ramp up climate aid for poor nations. In total at least $1.3 trillion is to be provided by 2035, with $300 billion mainly from industrial states. The funds are designed to allow developing nations to pay for more climate protection and adapt to the dire consequences of global warming.
“We know that the decisions we take today will not sufficient on their own to meet all the needs,” said Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock when she addressed the full meeting in the capital Baku. She said the $300 billion was just the start and affirmed that Germany would “deliver”. Baerbock said that those who had come to Baku to prevent progress and climate justice had failed. “And those who believe in a better world have won. The fact that we have achieved this in uncertain times when we need this system more than ever to protect smaller and weaker countries is a success.”
