Riyadh (dpa/d.de) - German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will be discussing the situation in and future of Syria at a conference in Saudi Arabia on Sunday. Baerbock is travelling to the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh to attend the conference. According to Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, representatives of important states in the region and of the United Nations, the European Union and Western partners will be taking part in the foreign ministers’ conference.

During a visit to Syria in early January, Baerbock had set clear conditions for Europe’s support. She said that Germany and the European Union wanted to help make the new future chapter of Syria a peaceful and free one. But that this was still far from certain. She explained that this required a political dialogue involving all ethnic and religious groups, involving all people.

Germany has played an active role in the region for years as a humanitarian donor and will also support the reconstruction of Syria.
