Federal Chancellor Scholz pays tribute to Jimmy Carter
Mourning for the deceased former US President and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
Washington (dpa / d.de) – Heads of state and government around the world have expressed grief at the death of former US President Jimmy Carter. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the “USA has lost a committed advocate for democracy”, and that the world had lost a great mediator who campaigned for peace in the Middle East and for human rights. Germany was in mourning with its American friends, said Scholz.
Carter passed away on Sunday at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. After his presidency from 1977 to 1981, Carter and his wife Rosalynn founded the Carter Center in Atlanta to promote democracy, human rights and economic development. He actively dedicated himself to his humanitarian work well into old age. Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his “decades-long commitment to the peaceful resolution of international conflicts”. US President Joe Biden has declared 9 January a national day of mourning. He ordered the US flag on the White House and the flags on all government buildings, military installations and embassies to be flown at half-mast for 30 days.
