Saarbrücken (dpa/d.de) – Germany marks the 35th anniversary of reunification today, with Saarland hosting the official celebrations. Under the motto “Future through change”, Saarbrücken’s city centre has been transformed into a vast festival zone. According to the state chancellery, well over ten thousand visitors had attended by Thursday, the opening day.
At the launch of the citizens’ festival, Saarland’s premier and Bundesrat President Anke Rehlinger said the event was a celebration of “democracy and unity, but also of subtle differences and diversity”. Through to Saturday evening, visitors can enjoy a wide-ranging programme featuring more than 600 artists and 150 exhibitors. Public transport across Saarland is free of charge throughout the festivities, while large parts of the city centre have been closed off to traffic.
Today’s official ceremony will be attended by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and French President Emmanuel Macron, who are all travelling to the Saarland capital for the occasion.
