Germany sends aid to earthquake zone
Malteser emergency team already on the ground in Myanmar

Cologne (dpa) – The relief organisation Malteser International is sending an emergency response team to the areas of Myanmar affected by the severe earthquake. The organisation made the announcement in Cologne. Two coordinators are supporting its emergency personnel who are already on site. “Our medical staff, experts in water, sanitation and hygiene, and trained volunteers are already deployed to assess needs and coordinate initial aid,” said Oliver Hochedez, head of the emergency response department, adding that there was an urgent need for medication and medical supplies. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is also preparing to deploy.
The aid organisation Help is providing emergency relief in the city of Mandalay in cooperation with local partner organisations, including food, water, emergency shelter and medical care, according to Help. Meanwhile, Welthungerhilfe plans to provide 100,000 euros in immediate aid. According to current information, more than 1,600 people have been killed in the earthquake in Myanmar.
