Leo Neugebauer wins gold in decathlon

Germany leaves Tokyo with five medals in the bag. Leo Neugebauer goes down in German athletics history in a gripping finale.

Tokyo (d.de) - Leo Neugebauer has celebrated the greatest success of his career at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo: the 25-year-old won gold in the decathlon, taking the crown as new world champion with 8,804 points. In a gripping final 1,500 metres, he beat Puerto Rico’s Ayden Owens-Delerme and Kyle Garland from the US.  

In addition to Neugebauer’s gold, the German team also picked up four other medals. Malaika Mihambo won silver in the long jump. Marathon runner Amanal Petros likewise won silver in an exciting race that ended in a photo finish. On the final competition day of the World Athletics Championship, the German women scooped bronze in the 4x100 metres relay, while Merlin Hummel achieved a personal best of 82.77 metres in the hammer throw to take silver.
