Berlin (dpa) – During a phone call, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has told Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, that Germany is willing to support the rebuilding of his country. As German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit announced, Scholz and Al-Sharaa agreed “that an inclusive political process is now needed that allows the participation of all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic or religious group, and provides rights and protection.”

Scholz assured al-Sharaa of the German government’s willingness to support the reconstruction of Syria “so that Syria can become a free and safe homeland for all groups of the population.” To this end, the German government will work closely together with European and international partners. Scholz congratulated the Syrian people “on their success in ending the Assad regime’s reign of terror.” According to Syrian reports, al-Sharaa thanked Germany during the phone call for taking in Syrian refugees over the past years.
