Locations and events: the USA in Europe during the Second World War
The United States actively commenced fighting in the Second World War after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Over 16 million Americans served in the armed forces at that time. Until the defeat of National Socialist Germany in May 1945, the USA played a decisive role in determining the course of the war in Europe – in the same way that it had in the First World War. The map shows a selection of locations that were important for the USA during the Second World War.
