Exciting voice
The Israeli singer Ofrin appeared with German thriller-writer Frank Schätzing.
Ofri Brin uses the name Ofrin when she appears on stage, which the Israeli singer did precisely 22 times in Germany between September and November 2014. She sang in the largest concert halls, including the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and the famous Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Ofrin, who has lived in Berlin since 2005, appeared alongside the German bestselling author Frank Schätzing (see page 66), whose latest novel, Breaking News, is a blend of thriller, political drama and family saga set in the Middle East. During these performances, which really cannot be called “readings” anymore, Schätzing received musical support from Ofrin, who incidentally knew neither him nor his books when he first enquired about the collaboration. She quickly realised, however, that Schätzing was a literary star in Germany and that appearing with him would be an exceptional opportunity for her.
Schätzing heard Ofrin on the radio in Israel: “For me she embodies the young Israel I got to know during my research trips there: open, unconventional and unique,” he says. During performances with him, she sang a mixture of pop and jazz in English and Hebrew – enthralling her audiences with a voice that is sometimes dark, sometimes crystal clear. It’s an exciting voice – just right for a thriller.
