The Goethe-Institut is the go-to address for anyone who would like to learn German. It offers language classes for all levels of skill, as well as promoting numerous cultural programmes.

What is the Goethe-Institut and what are its tasks? 

Anyone wishing to learn German will soon come across the Goethe-Institut. Since its founding in 1951, it has become a go-to address for all those who are interested in German language and culture, not only in Germany but around the world. The work of the legally independent association is sponsored by the Federal Foreign Office.  

How many branch offices does the Goethe-Institut have? 

There are twelve offices in Germany alone, and many more around the world: 151 offices in 98 countries. The first Goethe-Institut abroad was founded in Athens in 1952. 
 


How does the Goethe-Institut contribute to promoting the German language worldwide? 

Most people, who contact the Goethe-Institut, want to learn German. German classes and exams make up the majority of the cultural institute’s offerings. This started in 1953, when the first language classes were offered in Germany. These were already attended by learners from around the world. Nowadays, language classes are offered at the various branches worldwide. There are also comprehensive online offerings for independent learning. In addition, the Goethe-Institut provides support for German teaching at around 100,000 schools worldwide. 

What type of language classes are offered by the Goethe-Institut? 

The Goethe-Instituts caters for beginners and advanced learners with German classes ranging from A1 through to C2 level. Learners can also take an exam to determine their level of skill.

What does the Goethe-Institut do to share and promote cultural aspects? 

The Goethe-Institut does not limit itself to language teaching. It is also the place to go for anyone who is interested in Germany and its culture. Every year, the institute organises around 20,000 cultural events of all kinds. These include events such as concerts and readings, as well as residency and travel programmes for artists, aiming to promote preservation, networking and further education. In addition, the Goethe-Institut also strives to develop and support sustainable structures in the cultural and creative industries. Alongside cultural education, the Goethe-Institut is equally dedicated to promoting democracy and autonomy.
