What interests young people? The YOU Summer Break 2017 youth fair in Berlin showcased music, sport and lifestyle trends for the nineteenth time. Young visitors were also able to obtain useful information about education, training and careers. deutschland.de took a look around the fair.

Sporty: tamburello

The youth fair’s slogan is “Mitmachen, Anfassen und Ausprobieren!” – which loosely translated means “Join in, get hands-on and try it out!” Visitors had the chance to really let off some steam in Berlin, trying out new sports like “tamburello” for example – a mixture between volleyball and tennis that uses a tambourine as a bat. Tamburello is not in fact new at all, as it was played back in Ancient Rome.

Digital: everything for your smartphone

For youngsters, smartphones are far more than just a means of communication, which is why exhibitors presented all kinds of different apps and gizmos for mobile phones – like the PopSockets expanding phone grips that can be used to position a smartphone like a screen. Alternatively, two PopSockets can be used to securely store headphone cables without getting them twisted. The new school app Scoolio allows teenagers to keep track of their timetable and grades.

Tasty: pizza burgers and coconut chai latte

Teenagers love culinary experiments: colourful chai latte was being served up in the summer garden, a spicy tea flavoured with vanilla and cinnamon, coconut and almond or chocolate. The stall selling pizza burgers was even more popular – as could be seen from the endless queues.  The pizza burger comprises a bun in the shape of a burger, with a tasty cheese and salami topping. It’s hungry work visiting a fair!

Beautiful: solid shampoo

Beauty-conscious YOU visitors had the chance to enjoy a professional styling session: the Berlin hairdressers’ guild conjured up some surprising hairdos, while eyebrows were sculpted to perfection at the “Browbar”. The latest hit in the beauty product range is solid shampoo. Plastic bottles in the bathroom could soon be a thing of the past, as this shampoo is simply rubbed into wet hair. And it’s environmentally friendly into the bargain.

Colourful: tape art

Tape art is the new graffiti. Youngsters can give free rein to their creativity, daubing walls with these colourful strips of patterned adhesive tape. And of course, when the artwork is finished a souvenir selfie is a must.
