“Even when I was a child I was already very curious and devoured detective novels like The Three Investigators. I also had
a great sense of justice. So I got it into my head to become a policewoman. My
parents weren’t as enthusiastic about the idea and probably hoped it wouldn’t work out. Because at that time there were no migrants in the police in Hesse, Germany. But in 1993 it became possible. I passed the aptitude and sport test and started working for the uniformed police in 1994.
In the meantime, I’ve caught up with my schooling, passed my Abitur school-leaving exam and studied at the police academy. I’m now a detective in the upper grade of the civil service in Wiesbaden. At the West Hesse police headquarters I concentrate mainly on Turkish families in all kinds of conflict situations – from neighbourhood conflicts to forced marriages. As migration commissioner it’s my job to mediate.”
