Trong Hieu’s dream
The son of Vietnamese immigrants to Germany wins the Vietnam Idol 2015 competition.

A modern migrant fairy tale. In 1991 the Nguyen family fled from Vietnam to Germany through Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic. They waited many years for a residence permit. Their son Trong Hieu was born in Germany and grew up in a refugee centre. He took dance lessons, started singing, competed in various talent competitions – and dreamt of a better life. Eventually he moved to Hannover and studied to become a musician. In April 2015, he and his parents travelled to Vietnam, to get to know their homeland and to visit family. He heard about a casting session for Vietnam Idol 2015, entered it, reached the final and eventually won with 71% of the votes. The “German Hot Boy”, as he is now being called in Vietnam, has a great career ahead of him. “If my parents hadn’t gone to Germany, I wouldn’t be the person that I am today.”
