Minimising risks, utilising opportunities
The German Federal Government is restructuring its Africa policy in the form of its Policy Guidelines for Africa.
Several thousand kilometres separate Germany from the African countries south of the Sahara. Nonetheless, much of what happens in Africa has a bearing on Germany – be it dramatic scenes involving refugees in the Mediterranean, political instability, or successful cooperation and exciting innovations in the field of IT. The German government has a set of Policy Guidelines for Africa to take account of such opportunities and risks. Their primary objectives are to boost African ownership and regional integration as well as to provide support in areas such as the rule of law, economic development and crisis prevention. Furthermore, Germany supports the African Union based in Addis Ababa (photo). To date, Germany has promised the African Union a total of 187 million euros in funding.
