Would you like to find out where the German parliament engages in heated debate, where Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has his office, or where the representatives of the federal states meet? We take you on a discovery tour of political Berlin.
The Chancellery on Willy-Brandt-Strasse is the workplace of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Political decisions are prepared and coordinated here. Another important building is Bellevue Palace. This is the residence of the German head of state, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The Bundesrat, located at Leipziger Platz, represents the interests of the German federal states and has a key role to play in voting on laws and directives. The Federal Foreign Office at Werderscher Markt is responsible for German foreign policy, seeking to engage in diplomatic dialogue with other countries. In addition to the Federal Foreign Office, seven federal ministries have their headquarters in Berlin, while six are based in the former federal capital, now the federal city of Bonn.
The Reichstag building is a historical landmark and the seat of the Bundestag. This is where political decisions are made and national laws are passed, a process that also involves the Bundesrat. The imposing glass dome also offers visitors a panoramic view of the city.
The Bundestag is made up of 736 members who are elected by the people every four years. They address a wide range of issues such as the economy, security and climate protection. Find out more about the Bundestag here.
