Environment Ministry funds marine protection
Polluted seas put people, animals and the environment at risk. A new funding programme is designed to reduce pollution.
Berlin (d.de) – The German Federal Ministry (BMUV) for the Environment has kicked off a new funding programme to reduce marine pollution and protect the seas. The programme focuses on preventing plastic waste. Funding is expected to go to projects in the fields of sustainable manufacturing, circular design and recycling solutions. Other areas to receive funding include integrated waste management systems, consulting and capacity sharing, waste information systems and social transformation.
“The oceans are vital to human health. Polluted seas and plastic waste pose a growing threat to the food chain and the livelihoods of millions of people,” said Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke. The new funding was a sign of the BMUV’s commitment to international protections for seas and waterways, Lemke added.
Funding up to €6m is available for an individual project over a period of up to four years.
The BMUV’s “Marine Debris Framework – Regional hubs around the globe” (Marine:DeFRAG) programme expands the German Government’s activities to protect marine ecosystem. Since 2019, 16 projects in 25 countries have received approximately €82m in funding.
