Expo opens
The Japanese metropolis of Osaka is once again hosting the world exhibition, having already done so in 1970. One of the focus topics is sustainability - also in the German pavilion.

Osaka (dpa) - The world exhibition Expo has opened its doors to visitors in the Japanese metropolis of Osaka. Until 13 October, more than 160 countries, regions and international organisations will be showcasing their ideas on the subject of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” in their pavilions. Among other things, the emphasis is on sustainability and climate protection.
The German pavilion, which is made up of circular wooden buildings to symbolise the circular economy, is focusing on the future of modern life and the need to preserve natural resources. Interactive displays enable visitors to visualise their ideas of a city of the future and discover what German firms have to offer in the area of sustainability.
The Expo, which is taking place on the artificial island of Yumeshima (meaning “dream island”), is surrounded by the spectacular Grand Ring - a roughly two kilometre long and up to 20 metre high timber construction which, according to the organisers, is the world’s largest. In a time of geopolitical tensions, the construction is intended to symbolise the Expo philosophy of diversity and unity.
The organisers are hoping to attract around 28 million visitors.
