German chancellor travels to Rio for G20 summit
The fight against poverty and protection of the climate will also be discussed at the summit in Brazil.
Berlin/Rio de Janeiro (dpa) – Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz is travelling to Rio de Janeiro for three days to attend the G20 summit. Hosted by Brazil, the meeting will see the leading industrialised and emerging economies discuss the fight against poverty, the reform of international institutions such as the UN, the IMF and the World Bank, and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The presidency of the Group of 20 leading economic powers alternates between its members each year, with a summit hosted by whichever country currently holds it. Scholz will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping for a talk on the sideline of the meeting. Outgoing US President Biden will also be attending the summit. Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Lavrov. The G20 meetings are among the few discussion formats that still bring Russia and the Western allies together around one table.
