3D model of the Pergamon Altar

Collaboration between Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD).

28.09.2016

Why not make a virtue out of necessity? The hall with the world-famous Pergamon Altar will be closed until 2019 because the Pergamon Museum in Berlin is being renovated as part of the master plan for the Museum Island. An ideal opportunity presented itself, therefore, for the Collection of Classical Antiquities at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD) to realise an elaborate 3D scan of the over 2,000-year-old masterpiece. Supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the scan has led to the creation of a 3D model of the Pergamon Altar that is now available for research, museum presentations or reproduction – and naturally for online viewing during the renovation work.
