The courage to show solidarity
Active involvement in support of democracy, human rights and inclusion in Germany: three outstanding initiatives
A lot of people in Germany are involved in initiatives dedicated to promoting democracy, tolerance and diversity. Here are three exceptional examples:
The business consultancy Mut:Republik
The best innovations require multiple perspectives – that’s the message of the business consultancy Mut:Republik, which was co-founded by human rights activist Düzen Tekkal in 2023. Through its value-based consulting in the areas of recruiting, human resources and communication, Mut:Republik shows companies and organisations the potential that lies in social participation, and how positive change can be brought about in a sustainable way for everyone. The focus is always on people and on a working environment that thrives on the diverse trajectories and backgrounds of the employees involved. This inclusive strategy not only guarantees that nobody gets left out: by raising the visibility of a diverse range of talents, it also makes it possible to overcome the skills shortage.
The education initiative GermanDream
Equal opportunities and participation for every member of society: this is what GermanDream is dedicated to. It’s an education initiative founded in 2019 that actively promotes a free and democratic constitutional order and a civil society based on solidarity – and draws on the power of personal encounter and dialogue to do so. Young people in classrooms throughout Germany engage in discussion on issues such as respect, tolerance, pluralism and democracy with values ambassadors – including celebrities such as model and entrepreneur Sara Nuru, professional footballers and German international players Leon Goretzka and Jonathan Tah, and politicians from various parties.
Remembrance work with Initiative 19. Februar
By contrast, Initiative 19. Februar is dedicated to remembrance work and consistently combating right-wing extremist structures. The movement was originally initiated in response to the racially motivated attack in Hanau, Hesse, on 19 February 2020, in which nine people with a migrant background were murdered. The team repeatedly commemorates the victims by organising various events such as vigils and demonstrations, as well as calling for the crime to be properly investigated.
