Lord of the spices
Germany’s best known TV chef Alfons Schuhbeck swears by the power of spices.
Alfons Schuhbeck, probably Germany’s best known chef, could be characterized as a spice-mad jack-of-all-trades. “As a cook, nothing has influenced me more than spices,” says the 64-year-old, who once set off as a talented youngster from a small village in Upper Bavaria to learn the art of haute cuisine. Today, among many other things, he cooks in his own restaurant, on television and for the players of Bayern Munich when they travel to away matches. He has turned a love of spices to his advantage by establishing his own chain of spice stores. Whether rose sugar, apple pie spice or ajowan, for Alfons Schuhbeck the spice is in the seasoning.
