Germany seeks to support peaceful change of power in Syria
Federal Chancellor Scholz: law and order must be restored quickly
Berlin (d.de) – There is great relief in Germany at the ousting of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that law and order must now be swiftly restored, adding that all religious communities, ethnic groups and minorities must be protected. Scholz also said that Germany and its partners would make their contribution to stabilising the country based on the UN resolutions on Syria. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that despite an “uncertain future, the end of Assad is a first big sigh of relief for millions of people in Syria after an eternity of atrocities committed by the Assad regime”. The people in Syria deserved a better future, said Baerbock: “They have endured terrible times. An entire generation has grown up in war, hardship and humanitarian shortage under the constant threat of displacement.”
