Finding your job in Germany in seven steps
Mаríа Fernаndа Gаrcíа López is from Mexico and wants to work as IT specialists in Munich. The journey of this 28-year-old skilled worker is just one example of how you can come to Germany. The exact steps you need to take may vary depending on where you come from, your career and other factors.
1. Finding a job
Mаríа starts by finding information on the website of Germany’s Bundesagentur für Arbeit - the Federal Employment Agency, or “BA”. There she finds a page dedicated to ICT/Engineers and she also uses the general job portal to find current vacancies in Germany.
The BA offers a dedicated support programme for IT specialists from Mexico, which includes help with finding a job.
2. Language
Mаríа wants to speak enough German to get by in daily life, so she books a place on an online course run by the Goethe-Institut, which offers courses online and in person around the world.
3. Applying
Mаríа checks the job description and requirements for the new job. Next she contacts her potential new employer online and submits her letter of application, along with other important documents such as her C.V. and examination certificates.
4. Visa and residence permit
Mаríа has been offered the job! Now she can apply for a work visa. She meets the
requirements for the visa as her degree from Mexico is comparable to a degree
from a German higher education institution. The salary for her new job meets the
minimum requirement for shortage occupations (currently €39,682.80), so she is
eligible for an EU Blue Card. Skilled workers can apply for an Opportunity Card if
they do not yet have a job offer.
5. Essential documents
Mаríа wastes no time in making an appointment at the German embassy, and assembles all the documents she needs. These include her completed job applications, copies of her examination certificates and other documents, and passport photos. She also needs to take out health insurance.
6. Getting to Germany
Mаríа has received her visa, so she books her flights and prepares for her new life in Germany. She makes sure she understands the essentials, such as how to find an apartment. She also makes sure she has somewhere to stay when she first arrives.
7. After arriving in Germany
Shortly after arriving in Germany, Mаríа makes an appointment to visit the immigration office and assembles the documents she needs to apply for a residence permit. She also opens a bank account and registers with the city council as a resident.
Now she's ready to start her new job!
