Congratulations for Merz from numerous countries

Macron and Starmer highlight sound cooperation for a strong Europe.

Berlin (dpa) – The German federal elections were eagerly anticipated in many countries. Friends and allies have now congratulated the CDU/CSU and candidate Friedrich Merz on their election victory. French President Emmanuel Macron said he had spoken to election winner Friedrich Merz in the evening and congratulated him. He also said he had talked to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, reaffirming their friendship. “We’re more determined than ever to achieve great things together for France and Germany as we work towards a strong and sovereign Europe,” said Macron.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced: “I look forward to working with the new government with the aim of deepening our already strong ties, enhancing our shared security, and creating growth for both our countries.” 

Governments welcome the CDU/CSU’s election win

There were also spontaneous congratulations for CDU/CSU chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz from the Czech Republic, Romania, Finland, Norway and Croatia. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar sent well wishes from Israel. “I congratulate Friedrich Merz on his election victory,” he wrote. US President Donald Trump likewise offered his congratulations online: “Looks like the conservative party in Germany has won the highly anticipated election.” It was a “great day for Germany and for the United States of America”, wrote Trump, adding: “Congratulations to all – many more victories to follow!”

Right-wing populists congratulate the AfD

From neighbouring Austria, the leader of the right-wing populist FPÖ, Herbert Kickl, congratulated the AfD on its election result. The AfD also received well wishes from prominent French right-wing extremist Éric Zemmour.
