Project description:
Food for All Africa programme operates West Africa's first community food support centre in Ghana by creating efficiency and sustainable means of nutrition for vulnerable children, aged women, mentally challenged and communities through food recovery, redistribution, farming and forum for stakeholders within our food supply chain.
UNICEF Ghana in 2015 estimated that 1 out of 4 children in most parts of Ghana goes to bed hungry at a time when 45% of food goes waste along Ghana’s food supply chain. Food and Beverage Association of Ghana estimates show it’s member waste GH¢200,000 worth of food on monthly basis within the food supply chain. The Department of Social Welfare report “Census on street children” reveals almost 90,000 children live on the streets of Accra,3 out 5 of this children are out of school due to lack of regular means of nutrition.
The Cost of Hunger in Ghana report by the National Development Planning Commission in 2016 estimates Ghana loses GH¢ 4.6 billion which is equivalent to 6.4% GDP annually to hunger among children and 24% of all child mortality cases in are associated with under nutrition. Food that goes waste along our supply chain due to improper waste disposal forms methane gas which emits into our atmosphere.
At Food for All,we are using community based approach to address the economic and environmental impact of food waste in Ghana.
Goal and purpose of the project:
Our vision at Food for All Africa is to build community food support centres across the community that bridges the gap between plenty and scarce through the creation of efficiency within our food supply chain and creation of sustainable means of nutrition.
Our goal is to :
• Become a global emergency food recovery organization that will become a leader in Africa’s food supply efforts to the poor and hungry.
• Work with stakeholder’s in creating an efficient food supply chain across the continent
• Work with Government of Ghana to forumlate the first National Food Donors Encouragement Act in Ghana.
• Accelerate Ghana and sub-saharan Africa's effort in achieving the 2030 UN sustainable Development Goal 1,2 and 12
Motivation of the applicant / applicant team:
Our quest of building West Africa’s first food bank in Ghana begun when in the year 2011, our founder, Chef Elijah Amoo Addo came into contact with a mentally challenged man who recovers leftover food from street vendors and the hotel he worked to feed his colleague, mentally challenged on the streets of Accra. His action's inspired him to start the Chefs for Change Ghana Foundation in 2013 to work with chefs in hospitality companies to donate their excess food to vulnerable communities.
After meeting and interacting with stakeholder's within Ghana's food supply chain,Chef Elijah and his team on 13th June, 2015 launched the Food for All Africa programme in Ghana as a social enterprise that creates sustainable means of nutrition for vulnerable communities in Ghana.
Today we serve over 5485+ beneficiaries with food products and cooked meals recovered from partner organizations. We supply local staples such as maize, beans, fonio and soya at subsidized price to beneficiary orphanages and schools.
Use of prize money
Our greatest vision is to make food accessible and affordable to all in respective of once location and economic background. With that in mind we intend to use the prize money to purchase a mobile kitchen van which will be used to prepare and serve meals at the convenience of our beneficiaries, mostly at our school feeding program venues. We envisage to use the mobile kitchen van to serve 4,200 meals per week to school children, low income families, and vulnerable communities. The mobile kitchen van project is christened "Food4All On Wheels"
