Germany is committed to a strong defence industry.
With its new strategy, the Federal Government is establishing a clear framework for security and resilience.
Berlin (d.de) – The Federal Government adopted a new National Security and Defence Industry Strategy (SVI Strategy) this week. The new mission statement replaces the 2020 strategy paper, taking into account the changed security situation resulting from the Russian war of aggression. The aim of the strategy is to strengthen the defence industry in Germany and Europe and implement concrete measures to ensure greater independence. “It is crucial for Germany’s defence capability for us to have our own innovative and efficient defence companies,” said Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. The current security challenges required key technologies to be promoted in Germany, said the minister, noting that the SVI Strategy facilitated European and international cooperation so as to be able to close NATO’s capability gaps more effectively in the future.
“The overriding task of German security policy is to ensure that we can continue to live in peace, freedom and security in our country in the future,” said Economics Minister Robert Habeck, adding that it was vital to strengthen European defence capabilities in the long term.
One particular focus of the SVI Strategy is on strengthening European cooperation: Europe’s defence capabilities are to be boosted by standardising systems and coordinating defence industry capacity more effectively. The Federal Government particularly highlights the need for a strong European industrial base in order to jointly counter current and future threats.
